Day 310: Dorota Ostling

Artist’s statement
I was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland, where I studied Painting, Illustration, Product Design and Ceramics at National Academy of Fine Arts and where I graduated with a degree of Master in Fine Arts. Though I majored in ceramics, soon after graduation I turned my passion to illustrating children’s books, and then, to painting.
I carried my passions all over the world – lived in Canada, USA, Australia and Poland – working as an illustrator, teacher and painter.
Whenever asked for an artist’s statement I feel a little puzzled. I don’t have one, because I don’t design my pieces in advance. My inspiration comes in momentous bursts and surprising ways. I just feel the pull towards my working station. So, I start from patches and splashes of color and leave them alone for a while. When I come back, the story begins to tell itself. I just follow. It grows in unexpected directions. I never know in the middle what the end result will be, and I love it that way. But it’s always about beauty and feelings and a dash of surprise and maybe even a joke.
Now I live in Tempe, AZ, show my work in V.Tixi Gallery, Scottsdale, paint and work on a picture book illustrations which I wrote.
