Day 136: Gary Babb

Gary was born in Los Angeles, California. When he was a young boy his family moved to the San Joaquin Valley. Growing up outside the Sequoia National Forest area of California, his memories are of fishing from pristine rivers and hiking among nature's greatest living organism, the giant Sequoia.

In 1971, his family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where he resides today. The move to another unique geographical area where Gary the opportunity to explore another type of landscape, the Sonoran Desert-unique in all the world's deserts. The Sonoran desert is a lush wonderland including the largest cactus in the world, the Saguaro.

Gary is often asked about his "style" of painting. Not one to be labeled easily, he is most comfortable with Contemporary impressionist. He paints only from life using the artists' language of color and shapes rather words to express emotions. He likes to point out that painters' eyes are more than camera lenses.  Our first responsibility is to "see" nature's lessons. Then our jobs are to render the subject in whichever style the artist decides which will lead the viewer to a scene that is truer than any photograph my capture. An avid reader, he jokes that he has not read anything other than art related subjects for at least twenty years. He would like to leave you with this thought: "The treasure which you think not worth taking the trouble and pains to find- this alone is the real treasure you are longing for all your life.  The glittering treasure you are hunting for day and night lies buried on the other side of the hill yonder."-B Traven

Gary long found his treasure in nature and hopes you too will find her gifts in his art.
