Day 155:Angela Pittenger

For me, painting is a way of creating life and exploring new horizons.

It makes me happy.

There’s something about a brush or knife in hand as it glides across a canvas.

Nothing has inspired me more than my grandma, who’s beautiful artwork connected its viewers to her heart and to the world around her.

When she died, I found an envelope of photos she took, but never got to paint. So, I decided to use them as inspiration for my own paintings. Using only palette knives, just like she would do, I created some of my most recent works.

Painting with knives has a carnal feeling to it. It takes the ability to let go of the control a brush offers and to embrace the wild, and sometimes messy, results as something beautiful.

In a way, it serves as a metaphor for life — messy, wild and beautiful.

Day 154: Sam Hodges

My love of people directs my figurative sculptures. The anomalies of human interaction with one another, and their respective environments, fuels my passion to tell a story.  This story is at times a reflection of my own “head-on” collision with life; at other times, it is my reaction to the irony-filled world around me.

I like the intimate world of working small where my hidden thoughts can gently come forth without fuss. My use of color allows me to layer and direct the story these thoughts provoke.

I love humor, use sadness as a stepping stone to a higher place and through beauty, leave hope.

Day 152: Nancy Troupe

My early memories are filled with images of being sprawled out on my bedroom floor surrounded with crayons and coloring books.  School years were filled with art competitions, local and state-wide.  As a young adult, I sold my work on La Cienega and Melrose
in Los Angeles, I taught after school programs for kids, and adult classes at a local art studio in the San Fernando Valley.

During the "family" years, while raising 3 kids in Oregon, I stayed home to do t-shirt designs (some for the World Wildlife Fund), business logos, and free-lance design work for various companies.  Throughout my childrens' school years, I was active in their school art adventures, and enjoyed painting the backdrop scenery for many a school play.  My love for painting large grew from  that, and I eventually started my own mural business when we moved to Arizona.
